UMPO.AC.ID – True leadership begins from within — by mastering self-discipline before guiding others. This message was emphasized by the Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO), Dr. Rido Kurnianto, M.Ag., during a leadership session at Pesantren Mahasiswa Al-Manar.
The session, titled “Tips on Becoming a Leader,” was part of the Leadership Training Program for Batch I of the 2025–2026 academic year. The program is one of Al-Manar’s flagship initiatives in building character and leadership qualities among its student residents, held four times in each batch.
In his presentation, Dr. Rido reminded participants that while many aspire to be leaders, true leadership is rooted in the ability to govern oneself.
“Great leaders are not born from positions, but from habits,” he stated. “Simple routines like waking up early, being disciplined, maintaining cleanliness, and performing night and dawn prayers are mental exercises that shape strong character.”
He further explained that those who can lead themselves will possess the moral and spiritual strength to lead others. Consistent self-discipline, he added, cultivates a sense of responsibility and empathy toward others.
Dr. Rido also highlighted that leadership is not about control or authority, but about influence through example.
“Effective leadership is born from a pure heart and a well-ordered mind,” he added.
Through this training, UMPO aims to nurture Al-Manar students into resilient and ethical individuals — future leaders who are ready to drive positive change not only within the university, but also in society and beyond.
