UMPO.AC.ID - Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo (UMPO), through its Community Service Program, successfully held an educational event titled "Strengthening Road Safety Literacy" for members of the Lentera Community at the rectorate meeting room, in collaboration with IPDA Partono Supriyanto, S.H., Head of the Traffic Education Unit (Kamsel) of the Ponorogo Police Department. The event took place on Tuesday, June 17.
The program aimed to raise public awareness and knowledge about the importance of road safety in daily life. It also served as a concrete manifestation of UMPO’s commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the field of community service.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Through this program, we aim to equip the Lentera Community with a comprehensive understanding of traffic rules, ethics, and safe behavior on the road so that they can become agents of change in their respective environments,” said Ida Yeni Rahmawati, M.Pd., Head of the Community Service Program, during her opening remarks.
Meanwhile, IPDA Partono Supriyanto, S.H. expressed his appreciation for this kind of initiative. According to him, educating people on road safety literacy is crucial for reducing the number of traffic accidents and fostering a culture of orderly and safe driving.
In addition to IPDA Partono, the session also featured materials presented by AIPDA M. Nasrul Fuad, S.H., M.H., a member of the Traffic Education Unit. Topics covered included an introduction to basic traffic signs and road markings, the importance of using safety equipment (helmets, seatbelts), traffic ethics for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, common accident case studies in Ponorogo Regency, and preventive actions to avoid potential road hazards.
All participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the event by actively engaging in discussions and asking questions.
“We’re very pleased with this event. We’ve learned many new things, especially on how to keep ourselves and our families safe while on the road. We plan to share this knowledge with our families and neighbors as well,” said Erlina, a student from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), and one of the participants.
In addition to the material presentations, the event also featured the signing of a commitment declaration initiated by the Lentera Community. This served as a mutual agreement to actively participate in promoting road safety, both among students and in the wider community, with the hope of inspiring other communities to help create a safer traffic ecosystem for everyone.
